The Importance of Human Interaction in the Age of Technology – Info Gadgets

Despite the unlimited access that we have through online communication, it still amazes me to see how little we leverage it towards our in-person communication.

We frequently communicate with each other through the internet — via text, social media, messaging, e-mail, etc. — But, when it comes to in-person conversation, we often tend to avoid it.

We neglect because instead, we are so attached to the online notifications that we have waiting for us.

But, maintaining adequate levels of human interaction is still extremely important in this modern age of technology.

Without physical human interaction, we fall subject to potentially losing our sense of real connection. We’ll become desensitized, numb, and oblivious to the social cues that we would have witnessed ha only the conversation been made in-person.

Take online dating, for example. In an article published on CNN.com, the Writer cites a study that was conducted amongst “about 1,300 (mostly) college-aged students” who used the dating app, Tinder. Based on the findings, the study author writes,

“As a result of how the app works and what it requires of its users, people who are on Tinder after a while may begin to feel depersonalized and disposable in their social interactions, develop heightened awareness (and criticism) of their looks and bodies and believe that there is always something better around the corner, or rather with the next swipe of their screen, even while questioning their own worth.”

I personally have tried online dating several times and it never really worked for me. And I couldn’t turn back time to recreate an organic, natural interaction. Instead, it was completely premeditated and superficial.

Though, despite how active I am online (not online dating) and via social media, I will always still be in favor of talking to people face-to-face first.

Because I love to see people’s reactions — their smile, hearing them laugh, and getting the whole experience that would have been omitted if it were all handled online.
