Universal PiP Mode for videos

In 2018, WhatsApp introduced the Picture-in-Picture mode for videos. The feature allowed users to view shared videos from YouTube and Facebook directly in the app on a small floating window. Users could chat in the background while enjoying the video simultaneously. This year, any third-party video in the form of mp4 files shared by users will be able to utilise this feature as well.

Fingerprint lock/unlock

Privacy concerns have always surrounded WhatsApp. Therefore, leaks suggest that the company will be bringing in fingerprint authorisation for the app. Users will need to authenticate their identity everytime then come into the app. If the verification fails, WhatsApp will require the phone’s passcode or password to unlock. The feature was first seen to be tested on an iPhone and should roll-out soon after development completes.

Dark mode

The highly-anticipated dark mode for WhatsApp is scheduled to hit the messenger app this year. With dark mode, users will be able to reduce the strain on their eyes while using the app in darker ambience. Additionally, for devices with OLED screens, it could result in improving the battery life as well. Dark mode is expected to hit smartphones as early as January 2019.

Media preview

This feature will let users preview the media files from the notification tray. Until now, users had to open the message in order to view a photo, video or GIF. With media preview, users can check out the media content directly from the notification tray by expanding it.

Consecutive voice messages

This may be useful to those who communicate via WhatsApp’s voice messaging feature. Users had to tap on every single voice message sent in order to listen to the contents. With the upcoming update, WhatsApp will keep automatically start playing the next voice message after the chosen one is finished.

Sticker search

When the emoji search feature was rolled out last year, it made it easier for users to quickly access the desired emoji by simply describing the mood. WhatsApp is going to do something similar with stickers too. The app will let users search the kind of sticker via text they are hunting and will present them with viable options. It will be highly beneficial for those who use stickers a lot.

Group video call

This feature will let users do a video call with all the members of a group. The feature will let users choose all the members of a group and undertake a video call with them. The feature is already been rolling out to some users. You can check the availability of this feature by looking for “add contacts” button on the top edge of a WhatsApp group.
