Rocket League’s Cross-Platform Party System Delayed to 2019 | Gaming News

Psyonix has announced that the release of RocketID, its system for allowing cross-platform parties in Rocket League, has been pushed back to 2019.

In a post, Psyonix called the delay a “difficult decision” while acknowledging that it originally planned a 2018 release for RocketID. The developer found a silver lining in the delay, however, and pointed out that it will now have RocketID prepped to work even with PlayStation 4 when it launches.

“The good is that with Sony’s recent announcements regarding full cross-platform functionality, we can now make additional changes to prepare RocketID for ALL platforms should we receive permission to do so!” reads the post.

Psyonix’s mention of getting permission is of course a reference to Sony’s prickly history with cross-platform play. Last month, Sony finally began allowing cross-play but only in Fortnite and only in beta form. While Nintendo and Microsoft have long allowed developers to include the feature in any Xbox One and Switch games, Sony had been blocking the feature on PlayStation 4.

Sony’s policy came off as embarrassing to some and angered many gamers, especially when they learned they couldn’t carry over their Fortnite accounts from PlayStation 4 to Switch.

It’s unclear if Sony’s recent embrace of crossplay will extend beyond Fortnite, but Psyonix wants to be ready if it does. Today is the second time RocketID has been , however. It was originally scheduled for a September release before being delayed to a nebulous “future update.” Now fans know that update won’t come until the next calendar year.
