Marvel’s Spider-Man Is the Fastest-Selling PlayStation Exclusive of All Time | Gaming News
Insomniac Games’ web-slinging adventure was also Sony’s most pre-ordered game ever.
With 3.3 million copies sold within the first three days of its release, Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man for PS4 is the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation game of all time.
USA Today reported the sales milestone for Marvel’s Spider-Man, indicating that, assuming all copies were sold at the standard MSRP of $59.99, USA Today worked those 3.3 million copies sold out to be about $198 million. Though of course the collector’s edition of the game would factor into those sales.
Not included in either of those figures are copies that were sold as part of the $399.99 PlayStation 4 Pro bundle that comes with a copy of Spider-Man packed in.
One million copies of Spider-Man were preordered prior to its release, which is another record for Sony according to USA Today.
“Our expectations are always set at the highest levels,” said Sony Global Senior Vice President of Sales Stephen Turvey. The executive praised Insomniac for “bringing Spider-Man back to gaming in a way that you want to experience it.”
“It’s met and exceeded all expectations. I think the company, and the campus, and our fans are super proud of it.”
Sony and Insomniac released Spider-Man exclusively on PlayStation 4 on Sept. 7. It was already clear the game was set to be hugely successful just a few days later when it was revealed to be the fastest-selling game of the year in the UK.
Spider-Man has been critically lauded as well, with Tech awarding it an 8.7, writing that “the foundation laid here is undoubtedly a spectacular one.”
