Soulcalibur 6 Could Be the Last in the Series If It Doesn’t Sell Well | Gaming News

Bandai Namco’s confidence in the has been so low that Soulcalibur has been in crisis mode.

If the six year wait between Soulcalibur 5 and 6 has felt unbearable to some fans, they’d better hope Soulcalibur 6 is a success.

Producer Motohiro Okubo told DualShockers that the franchise was on shaky ground after the fifth installment, and that there may never be another game in the series if Soulcalibur 6 is a flop.

That would be the worst-case scenario, but publisher Bandai Namco apparently had to be slowly won over to even give Soulcalibur 6 the green light.

“The first thing is that the IP itself of the SoulCalibur franchise had low expectations from the company,” said Okubo. “It was actually facing a crisis of maybe disappearing. It took time for me to convince the company.”

For fans who trust series creators and developers, Project Soul, there is at least a silver lining:

“Since the SoulCalibur brand is facing a crisis,” explained Okubo, “we have nothing to lose, so we just decided to do what we want to do.”

If the end result isn’t what fans were hoping for, Okubo doesn’t want them to feel pressured to buy Soulcalibur 6 anyway, but he does want them to fully grasp the situation before making their decisions.

“We don’t want to blackmail the users by saying that it could be the last one,” Okubo said, “but as it is, yes [it could be].”

Bandai Namco recently revealed the characters Azwel and Tira, and fans can see them as part of the full roster of known characters.
