Introducing Origo’s 2018 Summer Interns | Branding

At Origo, we like to think we are more than just a full-service agency with designers and account managers—we’re also a diverse group of mentors, eager to spread our wealth of knowledge and expertise with those willing to learn.  For many years, Origo has hosted an internship program where our team provides mentorship, hands-on learning experiences, and constructive feedback to interns as they prepare to start their careers in the world of and advertising.

This we are excited to welcome interns Kayla Karsten and Alma Kim to the Origo team. With different areas of interests, backgrounds, and experiences, Kayla and Alma bring a wide array of talents and passions to further diversify our incredible team. As a senior at the Columbus College of Art and Design, Alma is well versed in motion-graphics, design, and video production, while Kayla, currently a senior at Ohio State Fisher College of Business, shines when it comes to developing compelling copywriting and strategic marketing plans.

Intern Q & A Session

Here are a few fun questions we asked our interns to get to know them a little better:

Kayla- Marketing Intern

  • Interests: Living on my own this past year, I’ve really taken a strong interest in cooking.  I also cannot get enough of serial killer podcasts, yoga, and taking care of my plants.
  • Inspirations: My dad is my biggest inspiration, instilling in me a positive outlook on life as well as a rad taste in music and a good sense of humor.
  • Best job you’ve ever had: Lifeguarding – there was never a dull moment working at the pool.  I definitely took for granted those long days in the summer sun, getting tan and doing nothing.
  • Worst job you’ve ever had: Working for a catering company—I was constantly working 4:00AM shifts and we weren’t allowed to eat any leftover food.
  • Favorite movie/genre: I’m really into Wes Anderson films—I’m either watching The Darjeeling Limited or Grand Budapest Hotel. If I need a good laugh, I’ll put on Wet Hot American Summer –it’s a classic! I also enjoy documentaries, especially any about World War II or popular conspiracy theories.
  • Favorite music/genre: Everything except polka and country.
  • Dislikes/pet peeves: Heavy breathing, people that pronounce gyro like “JY-RO”, the singer of Train, and paper cuts…just to name a few.
  • Something interesting about yourself (quirky/fun): Only a few close friends know this about me, but I am very good at doing impressions of people, mainly celebrities.  Two of my specialties are Lil’ Wayne and Christopher Walken.

Alma – Motion Graphics/Production Intern

  • Interests: I really enjoy planning things out for my friends and I – for example, I started the “Better Booties Buddies” campaign at my other internship to improve employee’s health and fitness.  It’s an eleven-week challenge where we do squats and push-ups everyday!
  • Inspirations: I spend a lot of time researching other artists in the motion graphic and animation field on Instagram and Vimeo.  My favorite animation studios are Giant Ants in Vancouver and Moth in London.  Their styles inspire me to explore more on the use of texture, shapes, and transitions between frames.
  • Best job you’ve ever had: The best job that I’ve ever had would be working at CCAD Student Agency where I got to learn a lot from my co-workers from different backgrounds.  I also got the opportunity to work with the Columbus Dispatch, Short North Alliance, and the Greater Columbus Arts Council.
  • Worst job you’ve ever had: The worst job I’ve ever had was working at a packaging factory for two months – it was just horrible!
  • Favorite movie/genre: I really enjoy Charlie Kaufman movies. Some of my favorites are Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, and Human Nature.
  • Favorite music/genre: My favorite song is Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler.
  • Dislikes/pet peeves: I don’t like when people wear shoes inside the house.
  • Something interesting about yourself (quirky/fun): I used to live in Sri Lanka when I was young!

Kayla and Alma have been a great addition to our team this summer at Origo.  We are excited to be part of their career endeavors and see how their creativity and insight take Origo to the next level!
