“How I Work”: Nichole Vine, Content Marketing Manager at Survey Monkey @nicholevine #HowIWork | Sales

It’s Thursday which means we are featuring a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader for our “How I Work” series.  Today our guest answers our version of “How I Work” questions inspired by one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as from Lifehacker.  We’ve been doing this for a few years now!  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This time I’m happy to feature Nichole Vine, Content Marketing Manager at Survey Monkey.  In her three years there she also worked as a Business Development Representative and a Sales Development Representative.  Nichole is skilled in content creation, email marketing/outreach, customer communication, and sales. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree focused in Journalism from Carleton University.  In addition to content she loves fitness, tea, dogs, sweets and popcorn.  Here in her own words is who shes does it.

First app checked in the morning? Email

First thing you do when you come into work?  Check Slack messages and take in calendar for upcoming meetings.

What is your email management strategy?  Never mark something as read until you’re finished with it or until you have an alternate plan in place, so you don’t forget about it later.

Most essential app when traveling?  TripActions, for travel, hotel and bookings.

How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused?  It’s either music or silence that keeps me focused, depending on the day. Either way, when I have work to get done, my noise-cancelling headphones are on, even if there’s nothing playing. If there is something playing though, it’s classical piano.

What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance?  Work/life balance is important, but it doesn’t often come naturally. Work life balance comes from intentional scheduling and letting yourself be okay with saving something for the next day. The only way you can achieve a true balance is to prioritize work and life independently, but equally.

Are there any work rituals critical to your success?  Keeping a to-do list is critical to making sure I successfully complete each project. With so many things on the go, it helps me plan, prioritize and keep everything on track.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live at work without?  Marketo, Outreach.io, SurveyMonkey, Google Suite, Slack, Camtasia, Outlook

What’s your workspace like?  Tidy, at all times! I even have a mini desk-sized bookshelf for my things. Clutter distracts me, so keeping my desk tidy helps me stay focused.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Use data whenever you can! Getting to the root of a project, issue or question can almost always be done faster when you dive into the data you have and use it to develop creative insights.

What are you currently reading? Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink

Last thing you do before leaving work?  Check my to-do list, re-organize my desk for the next morning and leave out anything that needs my attention first thing the next day.

Who are some mentors or influencers you wish to thank or acknowledge?  My first manager Sabrina and my current manager Rafal have both been incredibly influential mentors to me throughout my career at SurveyMonkey. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support and I really appreciate their guidance and advice throughout the years.

Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best?  My team: Rafal, Sean and Vincent who are always willing to give me feedback, teach me new things, joke around with me, and make each day I go to work fun!  My influencers: Sabrina, Rafal, Pej and Leela who always have my back and are open to talking through ideas and projects on the fly.  My family: Who are always a message away and there to support me through each day independently to the next.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?  An old colleague of mine said to me once, “the work will always be there” and that’s the best workplace advice I’ve ever received. It’s so easy to overwork yourself when you’re incredibly passionate about your company and your projects, but it’s always important to check in with yourself and the things you want to accomplish, at work and outside of work.
