At some point we’ve all complained about the price of gas. And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard my grandparents and even my parents talk about how upset they were when the price of gas went up over a dollar—how times have changed.
While I don’t have the answer to how to get older generations to stop boring you with stories about how much cheaper things used to be, I can share a simple way to save at the gas pump: consider a cash rewards credit card that offers cash back at gas stations.

This package is really expansive and it leads to the Discover it® Chrome coming in at the top of our list of best gas credit cards.
Discover now offers social security number monitoring and alerts if your number is found on any number of risky websites. You’ll also be notified if any new credit cards, mortgages, car loans, or other accounts are opened in your name.

So, which do we recommend?
That, of course, depends on what exactly you’re looking for.
The Discover it® Chrome card is a great general cash back card that also doubles as a decent gas card. If you drive frequently and need to fill up your tank more often, you’ll be met with a great bonus at the end of your first year of card membership, when Discover will match all the cash back you earned that first year.
I put it top of the list of best gas credit cards because of its versatility—even if you don’t drive a lot one month, the card will still work for you in other areas of your life.
As a bonus, the Discover it® Chrome card also offers small perks here and there that add up to a valuable offering. No foreign transaction fees, free credit score checks, and a solid security system. Altogether, it’s a good card—in your wallet and especially at the pump.
In my personal experience, a great credit card just for gas is the Sunoco Rewards credit card. But I also get points from my grocery store—so that is what truly makes it worth it. Five cents off may not seem like much, but paired with the substantial grocery points, you’re looking a great savings. And I only shop for myself and my partner, larger families earn even more points because they have to buy more anyway.
For people who drive a lot and want to maximize their savings at the pump, this is my favorite gas rewards credit card.
If you can’t sign up for extra rewards at grocery stores, the second best card just for gas is definitely the ExxonMobil™ Smart card, which offers six cents off rather than five (again, that adds up).
This is a straightforward gas rewards card. Exxon and Mobil stations are everywhere, so you should have no problem finding a station. Plus, all smartphones allow you to search for certain gas station near you if you ever can’t find one.
Summary
Recently, the price of gas has fluctuated frequently. A cash back card that offers rewards with gas stations in mind can help you get some money back, even when fuel costs are high.
