Not all of Trump’s statement is incorrect, however. While he falsely claimed that Apple is building “new plants” in the United States, he does note that the company is planning a “magnificent campus” in the country. Apple announced earlier this year that it will “establish a campus initially housing technical support for customers” in the United States this year.

What’s incorrect, as far as Apple has said, is that Apple is building “new plants” in the United States:

“Apple alone is bringing in $230 billion and they’re building new plants, they’re building a magnificent campus, they’re gonna be spending their money very wisely, but they’re spending it in our country, not in some other country,” Trump said in a speech on the White House South Lawn.

“That was made possible by the new tax cut and reform plan,” he continued.

The narrative of Apple building “new plants” in the United States is one of long-running falsehood. Trump first claimed last year that Tim Cook had promised him Apple was building three “big” manufacturing plants in the United States. Cook then dodged a question about such plants, instead touting the company’s existing commitment to job creation and growth in the United States.

As it turned out, Trump was seemingly referring to the singular plant being built by Foxconn in Wisconsin, which construction started on last month. The plant will make large LCD panels, not anything for Apple.
