Linux needs to be more effective in competing against Microsoft in the commercial and enterprise market. – Info Linux
We have seen the recent shift from Linux solutions back to Microsoft with Office 365 and Windows 10. Many people here have thought it was because of politics and that they were bought by Microsoft, however I think, we need to be more realistic in terms of why they are moving away from Linux. It’s hard to manage a business with lots of devices and people. You’re going to need device management software, identity software, it’s high cost.
I found this diagram from the MS Inspire event interesting. It shows that using third parties from different companies cost over $100. It’s easy to assume that the left is going to be a reference to managing a Linux OS. However the right shows that Microsoft has all of that for just $20.
I think the problem IMHO why Linux isn’t gaining a foothold is because managing Linux is a high cost with low benefit that lacks integration with each other. So I say that the Open Source community shouldn’t focus so much on the OS side of things, but instead compete against Microsoft with solutions that are integrated and affordable.
When Microsoft is incentivising companies, businesses and governments to move back to the Microsoft ecosystem, they will show them this type of diagram.
