Facebook Launched a Pre-Emptive Strike Prior to Brazil’s General Election – Info Advertisement

General elections are coming up in Brazil in October, and detailed some steps it is taking to ensure that the social network is not used to compromise those votes.

Head of cybersecurity policy Nathaniel Gleicher said in a Newsroom post that the social network recently took down a network of 196 pages and 87 accounts in Brazil due to violations of its authenticity policies.

He wrote, “These were part of a coordinated network that hid behind fake Facebook accounts and misled people to sow division and spread misinformation. The accounts and pages we took down were in direct violation of our policies. We’re always monitoring for inauthentic accounts, as well as other types of abuse, and will remove any account or page that breaks our rules.”

Facebook’s moves in Brazil follow the removal of more than 10,000 fake pages, groups and accounts in Mexico and Latin America due to violations of its community standards, which took place to the July 1 general election in Mexico.
