Verizon today announced plans to launch 5G technology in Houston starting in the second half of 2018. Houston is the third city Verizon identified as part of its four market 5G deployment plan, which will deliver residential 5G broadband service. Verizon previously announced Sacramento and Los Angeles.

Verizon has a long-standing relationship with the city of Houston, area first responders and residents, and this initial 5G deployment is supported by both state and local officials, including Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Houston is the third city to be revealed as part of Verizon’s “four market 5G deployment plan.” Part of Verizon’s focus is on residential 5G broadband service, which it says will match or beat the speeds of current broadband offerings.

Verizon is going as far as to tout commercial 5G service as a “fourth industrial revolution,” with CTO Hans Vestberg saying it will help “reshape cities and lead to unprecedented innovation.”

The iPhone is not expected to support 5G technology this year, but carriers have said they expect mobile hotspots to be the first devices to support the new standard.
