Can you backup a virus from one computer to another through a backup drive? – Info Mac

hello. I have a new laptop and I want to use it, however I am afraid that my current macbook has a virus or malware and so am worried that if I backup my laptop onto an external drive, and then plug this external drive into my NEW laptop and download everything, it will give my brand new laptop a virus or malware. Is this true?
